Trick Plays or Just Good Football?

Once again, I was wrong. During the first quarter of the Bronco/Vandal rivalry game, which the Broncos won with an impressive 58-14 all-around effort, I leaned over to my wife and said, "I think their staying very vanilla today so Hawaii won't have anything to look at from this film". Ha. Stupid me.

A couple minutes later punter Kyle Brotzman, instead of actually punting the ball, shovel-passed the ball to (I think) Tanyon Bissel for an 18 yard game. After that we saw the direct-snaps to the running backs and receivers with the quarterback as a wide-out, and all of those other nightmare formations for the opposing defensive coordinators. There was even some razzle-dazzle during a kickoff return.

Which begs the question - if so-called trick plays are all standard features of your offensive package, can they truly be called trick plays? If you definition of football is to line up head-to-head and see who can beat each other up the most, then I guess they are trick plays. But if the idea is to gain an advantage over the opponent in any fashion possible, then Boise State's "trick plays" are just good football.

I've heard them called "execution" plays. The reason they're not run routinely is because it takes a special situation and then precise execution to make them work. After the Fiesta, I heard one of the talking heads who used to be a coach use the term in a complimentary way.

I think that because these plays actually take better than usual execution and recognizing the proper time to use them (on the part of the coaches) I think it's not just good football, it's the hallmark of a great team playing excellent football. BSU is hard enough to prepare for given all the offensive weapons, the chance that there might be some special execution plays thrown in, makes BSU one of the most difficult teams to scout and scheme against.

My prediction: A close fought game but BSU gets some key stops from defense and holds on to the ball for the last 5 minutes of the game to win: 44-37.

I can't wait, should be a great won!
